Program NotesThis piece had been originally recorded years ago by the Dan Coates 24 Golden Piano Band, but the idea came up to do a new rendition of it using the latest recording technology. Months before the recording date, Rex made a MIDI recording of the prelude by connecting the Casio WK-1630 to the computer and recording the MIDI data from the performance into Cakewalk. That recording then sat for quite a while before being unearthed and fleshed out during the recording session. The original MIDI was played back from Cakewalk to the Casio, and the pitch bend wheel on the Casio was fed to Cakewalk and used to adjust the pitch of the MIDI data being fed back to the Casio. The audio output from the Casio was then sent back into Cakewalk to produce an audio track of the original MIDI data that could be mixed with the other audio tracks recorded during the session. The recording session added these additional tracks to the original piano part: 3 trombone, 2 trumpet, 1 baritone, 1 bass, 1 organ, 1 additional piano in the final measures, and 2 vocal. Final mixing was done over the weekend following the Friday recording session.
